As our valued bespoke
customer, we now offer you the ultimate choice of cloth design for personalized
suitings. Available in Super 140's Fine Worsted with Cashmere, The
Signature Collection is beyond doubt unique,
and exclusively designed by you. The many
hours involved in this bespoke service not only guarantee the most expensive
cloth in the world but also the most exclusive.
We begin by offering you a range of Super 140's yarns from which you select the base color for your suit length. Only the finest of yarns allow us to produce a bespoke cloth that is without doubt, a product of distinction. The
choice of decoration for the stripe is selected from our extensive color
palette and evolves through interpreting your exclusive ideas into the form
of a stripe, clearly visible at close-range and softly muted from a distance.
The stripe width is usually 3/4 inches (2 centimeters). The design for the stripe is exclusively yours too, whether this be your own name or that of your company or a distinctive motif. A computer generated color printout of the design is produced prior to production to ensure your complete satisfaction.
Upon approval of
the color printout, our Chief Designer will then transfer your design onto
point paper in preparation for weaving.
Holland & Sherry's
chief designer, Tony Addison, has the painstaking task of transferring the
Signature design onto point paper.
This consists of thousands of small squares representing one single movement
of thread.
The
completed Signature design plan
is then read by a master weaver, who punches out one card for each individual
line of the design. Because one card is needed to control each pick
(horizontal thread), as many as 1000 cards (depending on the length of the
name) can be required for a single suit length.
The
warp (vertical threads) is prepared on a hand-warping frame. The customer
generally selects two colors, one for the solid background and another for
the silk name stripe.
Holland & Sherry have rescued, restored and brought back into service two authentic, 19th century jacquard looms to produce a limited quantity of these exclusive, individual lengths. Their design has remained unchanged for more than a hundred years. Each Signature length takes several weeks to produce and involves some fifteen different processes. The
beauty of these jacquard looms is that they weave cloth at a far gentler
rate than modern day looms, strengthening the relationship between loom,
weaver and cloth.
It is comforting to know that whilst the world moves steadily towards greater mass production, the Signature Cloth is still made by hand, using techniques that have remained substantially unchanged since the early 1800's. Before
the length can be woven, a six inch pattern is submitted to the chief designer
for inspection. If all is well, the weaver completes the suit length.
Because of the intricate jacquard mechanism, only a single width loom can
be employed, which produces finished cloth measuring 29 inches (75 centimeters)
wide. The length of Signature
cloth is carefully cut out of the loom and is then subjected to the finishing
process, which involves many hours of washing and milling by skilled craftsmen
to impart that smooth, luxurious handle and appearance.
Examined
once more by Tony Addison before it is dispatched to the customer, the Holland
& Sherry Signature length has
now been London Shrunk and is ready for tailoring.
The finished product maintains the very essence of an age-old tradition and is a must for those of you who have an appreciation for both an exceptional standard of quality, and a high regard for nostalgia. Click Here for the Samples
